Superb 5.1 Super Audio CD.
I've been a fan of Dire Straits since I first heard Private Investigations from the Love Over Gold album playing on a CD at a High Fi show in Blackpool. That was when CD's were all sparkly and new and this was my first encounter with the new format and Fire Straits. Back then people used to claim that you could still a hole in a CD and it would still play perfectly - yeh, right. I think the player was a Morantz which was a part of Phillips at the time. It was a smallish top loading contraption but sounded pretty good. Suffice to say I bought all of Dire Straits albums. Initially on vinyl but subsequently on CD and more recently on SACD. It's great to be able to play this timeless music and now with all the clarity and panache that this 5.1 disc provides. I can't say that there is a bad track on this album. Even now at the inflated prices that some SACD discs go for I think they are worth the money. Realistically, one has to ask is an album ever really worth £100? Given that this one is less than £11 its an absolute steal - and is perhaps what those over inflated 'rare' SACD's would cost, if only the medium had taken off.Listening to track 9 - the title track in glorious 5.1 is a joy to behold.Other tracks on the album are1 so far away2 money for nothing3 walk of life4 your latest trick5 why worry6 ride across the river7 the man's to strong8 one world9 brothers bin armsIn short, a great album made even better by being in 5.1 on a SACD.If you like Dire Straits and you have the best to play the format, just buy it! At a touch under £11, you won't regret your investment.

The album that sold the CD format
This album became the one that made a wider audience appreciate how good CD's can sound. A superb digital recording that surpasses many of today's albums particularly in terms of quality & dynamic range.Mark Knopfler reunited with engineer (& now co-producer) Neil Dorfsman to make this amazing album. The opening track "So Far Away" sets the tone perfectly for what's to come. Highlights for me are "Your Latest Trick", "Why Worry" & "Ride Across The River".If you wanna test your hi-fi, then the wide dynamics on "The Man's Too Strong" & the title track will not disappoint. However, if possible, get an early pressing from the 80's. European versions, released by Vertigo, will usually be pressed by PDO in West Germany &, in very small writing, will have the DDD recording technology code on the back. There are some Warner Brothers copies pressed in the US & Japan (my copy reviewed here was from Japan) with the words "A Full Digital Recording" on the front & back.Definitely recommend

Unfreaking believable
I’m new to SACD’s. I’ve heard about the hype for a long time but only now I’ve been able to afford a SACD player. This was the first album I bought on CD back in the late eighties after listening it to death on tape and it’s one of my strongest memories from my youth discovering how wonderful this album sounded on CD. Well this doubles it. Quadruples it. I still own that CD and play it regularly (The original Vertigo west German pressing) I thought I knew every note on this album but obviously not. It’s like Knopfler and his band have just nipped round for a quick beer and camped in my living room to play one of my favourite albums of all time to me. Personally. I’m balling. Certainly one of the greatest engineered albums of all time. It almost feels obscene to only pay £13 for it.
