Q: Would this work to lift large metal plates with a hoist?

It would not be safe and that is not the intended use; if and when the magnet loses power even for a milisecond, it disconnects by design.

Q: There's no wire with this and I don't think I could add any if I tried. The screws on the connects don't turn. How to install?

Hi, please unscrew the screw on the front panel, then you can see 2 connects V+ and V-, connect them to your 12V DC power supply control with wire and it will be OK. thanks.
