Totally silent, easy to clean and set up
We had a plastic cat fountain that was about 20 years old and when the filters ran out, I decided to upgrade to this unit. Why upgrade? Well, the plastic just didn't clean up very well. Weekly, I would put the plastic one in the dishwasher and the pump in a mixing bowl with water and vinegar. The dishwasher couldn't get the charcoal residue off the plastic and there always was a film of slick goo on the plastic parts which I would clean off with a paper towel after the dishwashing cycle, effectively cleaning the plastic fountain twice. Also, a lot of the plastic parts on my 20 year old fountain started to break so it was time. This fountain is all stainless and should clean up better. It was really easy to set up too. In fact, I was so happy with this unit that I bought a second once for my 80 yo mother in law who set it up herself.I have two younger cats and we lost our twenty year old kitty last year. All of them won't drink out of a bowl and prefer running water. I'm absolutely convinced my senior cat lived so long even with kidney problems because he had access to water and actually drank it because it was flowing. IMO, if you have a cat, you need a drinking fountain. It's really the only way to go.So another reason why I think this fountain is an upgrade is because the cats have a harder time splashing water out of the fountain. The water collects in the center bowl and cats can choose to drink from the spigot, the center bowl overflow which drains to the front of the unit as shown in the manufacturer's pictures, or from the spill over reservoir. The spill over reservoir also helps prevent cats from splashing water out of the center bowl and onto your nice hardwood floors. This is something the older fountain didn't have a solution for and my cats often splashed water outside that old fountain or kids would accidently kick it and spill water. This fountain has most of the water contained under a lid so messes are prevented. Either way, I still put a little cat paw or slow eating pad under it to capture any spills but it's been dry in the week since I set it up.The water level window is nice. I don't think it will make any lightbulbs go off in my kids heads that the cats need more water though. I'll still end up being the main person resupplying the water. In winter, the dry air takes water out of the fountain faster than the cats so I don't think my weekly cleaning routine will change. Instead of simply refilling the fountain, I use the low water level as a message to disassemble and clean it. I am going to try a quick wipe down with soap and water on the larger parts, run the pump under the sink to get hair and dust bunnies out and then refill and add 1/3 vinegar and let it run for an hour. Then dump that vinegar water into the dishwasher, rinse, refill the fountain with clean cold water and replace the filter.I dump the vinegar water into the dishwasher to clean the dishwasher lines out. I've also experimented with filling the fountain's reservoir half with ice and water which helps slow water loss due to evaporation in winter and it also allows me to circulate the ice in my fridge's icemaker which if it isn't used a lot, tends to get ice clumps and doesn't dispense ice. That happens when you have a 5 person household and only one of those 5 people uses ice ever. Each time you open the fridge door a little humidity gets inside the ice maker and after multiple openings and closings, the individual cubes start to freeze together and finally become a giant block of ice that won't get broken up and then won't come out. Very frustrating at parties. Anyway, this process keeps the ice flowing. Finally, the replacement filters are $17 on Amazon which is a little more than the older fountain's cylindrical filters but the replacement time is longer so I think that's a break even feature. The manufacturer says to replace the filter monthly if you have 1 cat or every other week if you have 2 cats.

Highly recommended
My two cats have been using this fountain for 18 months or so. I clean it every three weeks (super easy), which seems perfect. (The water indicator window is brilliant... why don't all cat fountains have this feature?!) I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this fountain again. Highly recommend.

Filters well. Keeps bowl cleaner than others
Love these filters. They are rectangular and fit inside a plastic compartment that also filters. I love the stainless steel water fountains so much better. I think they are cleaner for the cats. Lasts longer then plastic ones with round filters.

Impressed
Great water fountain for cats. Keeps water fresh and keeps them drinking. Great for pets that have kidney issues, it really encouraged my cats to drink plus I think it's due to it constantly flows that keeps the water fresh.
