Will not cut 3/16" cable
I just finished installing my first cable rail system, using 3/16 wire. The whole project was much harder than described (RailHard). I bought the ARM RC-8 and was told that it would cut 3/16 inch wire, the most attractive cable size, but no matter how hard I leaned on it I was not able to cut a single piece. From photos I have seen the cutting tool produces slightly frayed ends because of the compression. BETTER: I used a Dremel tool with the small 409 cut-off wheels (Amazon, pack of 36 wheels for around $6) and that worked like a charm. The 16(?) individual strands of the cable pop one by one as you cut . Tips: the wheels are very delicate so wear safety glasses and be sure to hold the Dremel blade perpendicular to the cable as you cut -- took me about 30 seconds per cable. I wrapped one side of the cable with masking tape and grasped it with a vise grips, then while bending the cable slightly, held the cutting wheel at right angles to the convex side of the bend. The bending speeds up cutting. If the cable strands look a little "sprung" when you are through, use a bit of rag to twist them in the direction of the spiral and they pop right back into place, looking like a factory cut. On first attaining drinking age, every competent person should be issued a Dremel tool with all the chuck sizes and cutting-grinding tips. If you are a contractor, pay the money to buy a much stronger cable cutter.
