The Art of Ron Cobb

Love this book

I'm proud to say I have a collection of Cobb cartoons I bought in 1977, before he went to Hollywood. I could have told them all he was a genius. He redefined what spaceships should look like so radically and definitively every single designer today is effectively working from his templates. His talent extended way beyond that to costumes and alien races - he was irked that he didn't get to design the Alien as well as the Nostromo and its gear, but Scott wanted the clash of two different visions.A lot of this book hints at what might have been if Cobb had been given more leeway, but Hollywood is a world of compromises, and designers come way down in the pecking order, no matter how visionary they are. Oddly his early, radical left cartooning and campaigning is added almost as an afterthought in this book, when Cobb was the one who designed the three-arrow recycling logo that's ubiquitous today! A great book... I dropped hints that I wanted it for Christmas, and when no-one took the hint I bought it myself. So glad I did.

Ron Cobb was a giant in the profession of concept art. He came up with many of the iconic props in many famous films: Alien, Aliens, Conan the Barbarian, Back to the Future, The Abyss, Total Recall, etc. etc.I find this book fascinating as it describes the complete processes he used in the creation of his art. There are loose conceptual sketches, through to highly polished, finished pieces of art in this book.Very enjoyable and insightful for anyone interested in creativity of the sci-fi and fantasy kind.

Great, quality presentation. Really impressed and always good to learn more about the artists behind the seminal sci fi and fantasy of our times. The vision behind the visionaries if you will.Add this to the collection along with the Syd Mead, James Cameron, Ralph McQuarrie art books, the Rinzler Alien and Star Wars books, and the other associated tomes, and you’ll have one hell of a legacy conceptual science fiction art library that will outlast you and keep generations to come, enthralled.

I love the work of Ron Cobb so when I saw this - I had to get myself a little present.

Bought this book for my grandson, who loves it!

Amazing book. I’ve always been a follower of his work.

He was at the top of his game....I LOVED this book...Its a MUST to have.
