The Legend Of Korra: The Complete Series [DVD]

A great follow-up to one of my favourite animated series
This great box set includes all four seasons of the brilliantly entertaining 'Legend of Korra' series. The series as a whole follows Korra, the Avatar following Aang, as she first has to fully develop her powers as she deals with a variety of threats. The first two discs of this set include all twelve episodes of the first season, 'Book One: Air', as well as commentaries for the first and last two episodes of the season as well as a short puppet featurette. The season itself is very entertaining and sees Korra attempt to master Air (the only element she has had trouble with) while competing in professional Bending competitions and dealing with anti-Bender sentiment in Republic City, the capital of the allied nations. I very much enjoyed this season and the antagonist Amon is probably one of my favourite villains of the Avatar franchise as a whole. The animation and action in the series are both very good, as is the voice acting of the entire cast. The season also does a very good job of reintroducing the world of Avatar, showing how much has developed since the end of 'Avatar: The Last Airbender' and introducing the nice steampunk feel of the setting. The plot of the series itself is also reasonably good with some nice twists here and there, even if the final resolution is a little quick for my liking. Of the characters in the season, my favourites have to be the Airbender children, who are all very fun, as well as Toph’s daughter Lin who makes a very good chief of police. Korra herself is also quite interesting and a nice change from Aang.As its name suggests 'Book Two: Spirits', the show’s second season, sees Korra deal with the Spirit World and its inhabitants for the first time as the bridge between the two worlds as Dark Spirits begin attacking Water Tribe ships. Matters are complicated however by a longstanding disagreement between Korra’s father and his brother Unalaq, the chieftain of the Northern Water Tribe that leads to trouble between North and South. This second season is just as good as the first with some very nice action scenes, especially in the final few episodes, and some great animation. The season also sees the history of the Avatar explored somewhat with the two episode flashback to the life of Wang the first Avatar probably being one of my favourite parts of the entire show. This season introduce a number of interesting and entertaining characters such as the Water Tribe entrepreneur Varrick and Korra’s cousins Desna and Eska. The series also sees some nice development for some of the existing characters, especially Tenzin and his eldest daughter Jinora. Unfortunately however the main human bad guy of this season isn’t anywhere near as entertaining as Amon from the first season.'Book Three: Change' sees the world forced to deal with the consequences of Korra’s actions at the climax of the previous season. One of the unexpected result of the events of Harmonic Convergence is for a number of regular people developing Airbending abilities allowing Korra, Tenzen and their friends the chance to rebuild the Air Nomad society. Meanwhile however, a group of powerful Benders have set their sights on the Avatar with malicious intent. This third season builds wonderfully on the previous two, with some truly great action scenes (the final fight in the season finale is particularly good), an interesting plot and some very good characters introduced. The four Benders hunting the Avatar are particularly good and are far better antagonists than those of the first two seasons. The animation of the series continues to improve as well, as does the world building (there is some very nice information revealed about the Beifong family and various different forms of Bending) and character development (Bolin in particular has a nice character arc this season). This season is well worth five stars on its own.The fourth and final season, 'Book Four: Balance', takes place three years after the end of 'Book Three' with Korra still not back to her full strength following the events of the 'Change' finale. Meanwhile, life in the rest of the world continues with the new Air Nation attempting to fill in for the missing Avatar and a new power rising in the Earth Kingdom. While I probably prefer 'Book Three: Change', 'Balance' is another very entertaining season of the series and is a good way to end the show. Korra’s character arc is easily the best part of this season (and the series as a whole in fact) as she attempts to come to terms with her actions and her role in the world. There aren’t many new characters introduced in this season and those that are aren’t great but the main antagonist of this season is very entertaining and is probably my second favourite of the series after 'Change' antagonist. The animation of the series remains great with some truly spectacular action sequences, especially as the season reaches its climax. The season also sees the return of a favourite character from 'The Last Airbender', who is just as entertaining here as ever. On the downside I feel some elements (such as the spirits) are terribly underused and the final episode itself is a little lacklustre when compared to the penultimate one. In addition to this, episode 8 is unfortunately a clip show but it is at least an entertaining one as it takes the form of various characters retelling the events of the series in their own unique way. In the end I feel that this final season is worth a high four and a half stats. This eight disc set is very nice but I do feel that it is a little light on special features with only a few featurettes and some episode commentaries. Overall I found 'The Legend of Korra' to be a very entertain series that is a worthy successor to 'The Last Airbender', and I personally prefer it to its predecessor in many ways. The series as a whole is probably somewhat more serious than its predecessor, probably due to the older age of its main cast, and this is something that some fans of the original may find a little disappointing but I feel it suited the series perfectly. The setting of the series is also very good with the steampunk styling being something I like a lot. I feel that this series as a whole is well worth a full five stars and anyone who enjoyed the previous Avatar series should also enjoy this series in some way.

Excellent, but not flawless.
I'd actually, in truth, give it more like 4.5/5. This is an excellent series, but not flawless. The writing is generally consistent, doing both drama and comedy very well. The animation is superb throughout, though the use of CG for the vehicles is not to my personal taste. The storytelling is overall very good, with each of the 4 seasons being compelling and enjoyable. The latter 2 seasons I felt were slightly weaker, but still far from bad. The story touched on some fairly mature themes at times, and this was it's greatest strength, but also it's greatest weakness. The more mature themes meant it could be more compelling to an older audience, but at the end of the day, it IS a child-friendly series. The writers were limited on what they could get away with, so don't expect brutal violence, or ground-breaking social statements. Nickelodeon also cut the budget for the later seasons, so as said, there is a notable dip in overall quality towards the end. It far from cripples the series, though. Also, if you're here for romance, keep walking. It's there, but it's rushed and ham-fisted. It's a Saturday morning cartoon about magical shamans beating each other up, what did you expect? :p Overall, DEFINITELY worth a look, especially if you liked the original series, or anime/superhero cartoons in general. The inclusion of a strong female lead is also a welcome change of pace, while never being preachy about it. Well done, there. Would definitely recommend.

Excellent show and product
I love avatar the last airbender so when this was announced back in 2012 I was excited unfortunately I never got the chance to watch it so I waited for the dvd the complete collection wasn't available for a while so when saw the complete collection was finally available for sale I jumped at the chance buy the whole lot all four seasons in one it arrived on time and was well wrapped I much prefer this to the last airbender box set as the dvds are in one box rather than separate one so you can watch one after another in one go it's a must have for any avatar fan 😀

Excellent series!
This is the sequel of "Avatar: the legend of Aang" and I really enjoyed watching them both. This animated series is both for children, who will love the characters and the stories and for adults, who will get important morals out of it (friendship, diligence, loyalty...). You will probably also enjoy the humour and the animations. Great series for the whole family!

Good series, good price - well worth watching.
Arrived a day late (black friday sales overloading deliveries?), undamaged and well packaged.I haven't opened it because its a christmas present for my kids. But the box looks good (1 'double width' dvd case slides into a thinish card sleeve open on top and bottom) and well illustrated under the clear wrap. They saw this series on TV after watching the 'prequel' Avatar series. And loved it. All of them, from the youngest to the oldest (even if the oldest pretends to be too kewl for it now). And they'll be happy to see it again. I will too. Not many TV series I can say that about. Its a great series. A single overall story arc, split into self contained episodes. A consistent story 'world', Good animation. Good voice acting. Likable characters. (Series was apparently downgraded by Nickleodeon in the last season, but still very good). I got them the even better (my opinion) 'Avatar' series too. You probably don't need to watch Avatar to understand and like Korra, but its the same 'story world' with Korra set about 75 years after Avatar.

Do I really need to say anything?
This is what a sequel series should be. Korra is great both as its own series and a follow up to The Last Airbender from its twenties New York inspired setting, to it's world building, to it's deep themes and conflicts, and its old newsreel style episode recap. It's just a great series though it has its flaws I look forward to re watching on DVD.
