Art Deco style for today.
OPIS is a German Company responsible for the design and development of this retro style phone, although it is made in China. It closely resembles the Western Electric model D1/202 circa 1930 Art Deco period phone, which was a `workhorse' in the USA during the period. This retro phone has an authentic appearance, notwithstanding its modern plastic casing, (the 1930 original was moulded in zinc alloy). Installation is simplicity itself; just plug it in - no display screens and memories to set up. It comes with a UK adaptor for connection to BT Phone Outlets (or a BT answering machine in my case) and supports DTMF Menu Control (Touch Tone Dialling) suitable for telephone Banking etc. It also allows last number redialling - #/R.The ring tone is electronic and not a bell. The original 1930's phone had a separate bell base that could be attached. There is no room for a bell in the phone itself, as it is so svelte. There is a Hi/Low volume switch under the base of the model I received, although it appears that some earlier versions may not have this. It comes configured for touch-tone operation; pulse dialling is not much of an option for modern applications. The casing on the black version resembles a Bakelite finish that gives the phone a more solid look. Sound through the handset is loud and clear, and the length of cable connecting the phone to a standard UK wall outlet is a generous 4+ metres.Having grown up with manual exchange telephones of the 50's, (pick up the phone and wait for the operator - "Number please"), and later GPO dialling telephones, I am not in the slightest way inconvenienced by having to dial the numbers. In fact, to use these telephones offers a therapeutic exercise in simplicity in today's fast-paced, information-overloaded and stressed-out world. Add the esoteric satisfaction that the Art Deco design imparts, and there is a style that is way out of reach for modern DECT phones. Time will tell as to reliability.Update: I have had this phone for 4 years and it still works OK. However, I have sidelined it for a genuine ex GPO refurbished type 746 telephone of 1978 vintage, which is of far superior build - British engineering in its heyday. I have found that the base of the Opis FunkyFon is so light that it is necessary to hold it down whilst dialling. It has pulled off the desk and dropped onto the floor if I do not stay close to it. The vintage ex GPO 746 weighs three times as much and the dialling mechanism is much smoother - just like the old days. It also incorporates the original bell ring. I keep the FunkFon for tone dialling when needed, because the 746 phone uses pulse dialling, however, pulse dialling is still supported by most current telephone exchanges. Having said this, the FunkyFon is still better than many retro examples available.

Good to look at and works well
I’ve had the phone for 7 months and I’m pleased with it. It certainly looks good. I’ve owned retro phones before and both suffered from very poor volume. This one, on the other hand, has proved very good. The received volume and quality is more than adequate even for a 73 year old. The transmitted signal is also very good as I can testify from listening to calls from my dear wife on my mobile. My only minor criticism is that if you lift the receiver and attempt to dial then the base moves. It may look like an old phone but it is nowhere as heavy. To dial it is necessary to place the receiver on the table and hold the base with one hand whilst dialling with the other. I do not find this too much of a problem as the phone is used mainly for incoming calls. Rotary dials may look nice but push button keyboards are quicker and easier.

Excellent phone
Had this phone for 6 months now and it hasn't let me down yet. No crackles or fading in and out like the cheaper version I had previously. The ring is not annoying and is set at a perfect volume. The look of the phone is sleek as well as quirky. The only thing that is not good is that it's not quite heavy enough to turn the dial on the higher numbers without holding the phone steady without the phone tipping slightly - so obviously if you are holding the reciever in one hand and dialing with the other hand there is a problem.

This telephone was a gift and liked so much, I bought a 2nd one.
This telephone looks good in any roomy I choose. One query: could a slot for the cable be included on the other side of the base to enable the receiver to be hung for right handed people? I imagine this small, but convenient addition would be easy to rectify. Thank you for your consideration

Top phone!
Got this as sick of the kids using our previous phone that was cordless and could never find the thing when someone rang or when you wanted it. It’s in one place all the time now and had hours of fun watching them trying to figure out how to use it too!Other than that it’s a fantastic phone and looks good too.

Lovely
Looks great, not too flimsy but not as heavy as the old ones, which is good. Satisfying dialling mechanism, and you can put your phone number on the paper in the middle. Lovely.
