Does what it claims and does it well
This is a great product and it works wonderfully. Read about the product and understand what you are buying and set your expectations accordingly. The negative reviews that I have read mostly seem to stem from people not really knowing what they are buying, what the product can and does do and how to most effectively use it. It does what it claims and it does it well. Both of my children have used it for fun as well as for my oldest child's science fair project. We used the proper stencils and double thick poster board as well as regular weight paper to cut out letters and matte for photos. Thicker papers just require a slower hand, more pressure and possibly several passes but even at that it produces a much better product than cutting by hand and in a much shorter amount of time. Once I showed my kids how to properly use the unit they did fine on their own, as did the neighbor children.

Too hard to push button whole time cutting
I read the negative reviews but thought it would work for me. I am an adult and like to do child type art. The button is difficult to push down, esp to hold down the whole time you are working. I thought I would use rubber band to hold it down and use the on/off switch on the base. A rubber band will not hold the button down. You must go slowly for the cutter to work properly. If you go too fast, you need to go over it again - - and that is when you get the rough edges others are talking about. It is basically a needle that goes up and down to cut the paper, if you go too fast, the cuts are too far apart. It can be hazardous to children! It is designed to stop with the needle inside the casing; however it stopped a few times with the needle sticking out. I even scratched myself on it.The projects they send can easily be cut with scissors. The unit is heavy and after a few seconds I wondered if I would ever finish. I wanted to quit. The MAT is the other reason you can have rough edges and the project does not look good. Each time you cut a line, it leaves an indent in the mat that interferes with future cutting. I would suggest a self healing mat instead of the one that comes with this tool. This is such a great idea and seems to be well made, and the way the mat and tool snap together to make it easy to store or carry around is all great. But the one thing that would keep me from buying it is the push button. (I would buy a different mat to use)Even so, I would not recommend this for young children. It does require skill and patience, not to mention muscles and stamina.

Sloppy cutting tool -- why bother?
My 7-year-old was excited to use this, and his first project looked terrible. He cut out a shape from paper, and we could have done just as well if we had just used our fingernails to tear the paper where we wanted it cut. It's not a toy for creative kids who want to do their own thing -- it's only good if you want to build the pre-planned limited number of projects with the materials included in the box.

I had an old one of these that worked beautifully for 10 years and wore out
Works perfectly. I am replacing one that is 10 years old and finally wore out. I'm a book binder and this product makes parts of what I do extremely easy. Don't know what I would do without it.

Disappointed
I was disappointed with the product. It does not cut, but rips the paper. I was hoping to use it in place of an Exacto knife. This item is not able to cut precisely enough for the projects I need it for.
