During the 12th & 13th century in Europe, this Great Helm was introduced onto the battlefield and worn by knights and other warriors. Historically it is believed to be of Germanic origin, but was widely popular among many regions. The replica is made entirely of forged 18G & 19G carbon steel that is stamped and formed into hand fit shape to fit adult sizes. It has true armoring functionality based upon the weapons it would historically defend against. This Great Helm is a little bit more unique since it has a hinged Visor that can open to reveal the face. It makes routine tasks much easier to accomplish whilst wearing the helmet by just flipping up that visor so you can see very clearly. The rotating hook on the visor is meant to connect with your cotton padding arming suit (absorbent padding worn under the armor) with a special strap, not to connect with the helmet itself. To be frank, the visor is supposed to be kept open just partially by about a quarter inch to allow airflow, and the nose might touch the visor if the small visor gap opening is not present (depending on size and fitment).

This helm looks great on the shelf
This helm looks great on the shelf, and is fine to wear with the visor open. I cannot wear it with the visor closed, without crushing my nose completely flat (or at least I suspect it would close if I did that). I will probably still wear it to a Renn Fest, since I would want to have the visor open anyway.

Good Quality
My teen used this for his costume. It looked great but was uncomfortable to wear for a long period. Its a bit heavy. Great for a mantle piece. The helmet does come greased or oiled up. I am giving 5 stars because he seems pretty happy with it.

Worth your money!
A truly awesome piece, it's pretty large, while it makes a great mantle piece, I wanted it for a costume so I altered it a bit with some foam padding to keep it in place, and used some industrial strength Velcro to keep the flap shut, I recommend the 15 pounds hold strength for safety, and to cover the inside of the flap with the soft side of the velcro for your nose so my nose didn't push it open and to not freeze my nose on the metal, and gave it a nice matte black paint over.Fully deserving of the five star rate!
