For Aquariums bacteria in a packet for the most part are HETEROTROPHIC bacteria, the reason many such products do not shorten the cycle in any way. Autotrophic bacteria accomplish the nitrogen cycle. Autotrophic bacteria require oxic conditions to survive, and in general (with few exceptions such as supposed "oxygen encapsulated autotrophs") do not survive in the packaging, whether or not they are the correct species. (and indeed nitrobacter and nitrosomonas are not marine species for saltwater Aquariums .) On the other hand Heterotrophs operate in anoxic zones, and faculative heterotrophs can survive in hypoxic and oxic zoneThese "dormant" autotrophs, will show a lag from introduction, before they actually become viable, and with the long generation time, 15 - 24 hours to reproduce, opposed to 15 min to an hour for heterotrophs, your cycle is not going to be sped up or complete.Except in few cases these products are not worth the investment, and the tried and true methods, will do the job, the time frame will be the same (in most cases) either way.
