works well with Linux, but CMOS battery is difficult to replace
After verifying that the laptop boots and functions under Windows 7, I repartitioned the disk drive and installed two Linux distros (Fedora and Linux Mint). The only major incompatibility with Linux that I have noticed is that when an SD card is inserted into the card reader, the system hangs. The log file shows errors reported by the device driver, even before an SD card is inserted, so this could be a software problem. My workaround is to disable the card reader in the BIOS.The other problem is that the CMOS battery is depleted, so the real time clock (RTC) does not retain the time while the system is powered down.Replacing the CMOS battery entails disassembling much of the laptop (per web research), so my workaround is to manually set the time in the BIOS before booting into Linux.I have not evaluated the system battery, because I always power the system from the included Dell power adapter.

Windows 7 Not Genuine
Received laptop in box with power supply... thats it. No vendor documentation, no activation code. I turned on computer and it booted up to Windows 7 and prompted me for activation code which I skipped. After initializing I get the message This copy of Windows is not genuine so I used the old activation code behind the battery which did not work. It appears that these computers are being shipped in pirated windows 7.

Good product, Great customer support
I like the computer because the laptop was easy to upgrade the RAM from Amazon; and only had to unscrew a few screws. The back plate was not like a HP, which I had to consult website to add RAM. The computer is able to run my World Community Grid at 75% CPU usage and 50% of the time and stay under 160 degrees F.

No software keys
No software activation keys included with machine. Computer arrived in excellent condition, and on time, but is still a hundred or so bucks away from usability. No time to return, it is for a college student. However, even with the extra software purchase, not a bad deal..

Update - received refurbished unit, not new
The unit was delivered with less memory and a smaller hard drive than advertised. I kept it as it was still adequate for my purposes, but this might be an issue for others.I selected this model for features such as size, sturdiness, maintainability, included optical drive, matte screen with a more square aspect ratio than most current models, and Linux compatibility. I've only been using it a few weeks, but other than the discrepancies noted above I'm quite pleased.Update - I hadn't noticed at the time I wrote the above, but the unit is refurbished, not new. The only indication is a small sticker on the bottom. I don't see anything in the ad indicating this to be the case. I now regret not spending a few dollars more to buy directly from Dell.

Bit on the slow side
I thought Win7 would run faster than Win10. Maybe it does but still a bit slow but better than a Chromebook!
