Gratitude for the words on these pages
This book was recommended to me as I have been going through very difficult spiritual transformations over the last 6 years. This last summer it all came to a head and I thought I was going crazy. This book soothed the worry and panic. Once those two obstacles were gone the next step in my path of awakening was smooth.

This book saved me
The shipping was fast and came as expected. This book is one of the most important books that I have ever read. I can't speak highly enough for it. If you have ever had a Spiritual emergency, there is no better book to read. If you have been diagnosed asa bipolar or schizophrenic, this book could save your life.

Worth the Read
Worth the read if you are having a hard time with intense spiritual growth. I think there are a lot more angles that could have been covered, or maybe just looser explanations on certain parts, since each person is different. But it definitely does give an idea of why and how some of this inner tribulation occurs and how to cope. And it also shows, we don't need Prozac or Xanax every time we struggle, as quite often it is not just a chemical issue, it's much bigger. Glad to see this information getting out there, I know so many people that need this book when their minds open a little more and they are ready for it.

A long way to go before we have answers!
This was an assigned book for a psychology class. Interesting experiences from the author’s personal experiences and his studies. Really makes you wonder why this was written in the nineties and we do not seem any further ahead in some of these areas than when this was published.

promises but doesn't completely deliver
Original thinking that reaches back to psychodynamics but is far more ambitious in its range, the ideas put forth are original and inspiring, but the content is highly subjective and I found it filled with anecdotes but not always convincing, and far from instructive or providing direction or comfort for anyone going through such a crisis, or witnessing a loved one in such a crisis. In this age of prescription pad psychiatry, this is a very different approach to crisis and growth, but I wish there was more substance here. The very fact that the book discourages people from more traditional treatment is reason off to provide more substance, and less dogma. The thinking is original, and inspiring, but that doesn't make it necessarily reliable. I was disappointed by the end of the book.

Fantastic read
I have read most all of Stan and Christina Grof's books and can honestly say they are not only well educated people, their books are very well written, practical, and really do offer the self seeker "help".As a qualified Psychologist myself, Stan and Christina's work is down to earth, with a human element that is not on offer throughout the psychology community.

Great resource!
An excellent resource for individuals or friends and family of individuals who experience a spiritual crisis or are trying to widen their scope of understanding re: experiences that push the boundaries of what is considered “normal” - Western medicine’s clinical approach reflects our culture’s preference for consensus reality, a lack of genuine understanding of altered states of consciousness, and strong tendency to pathologize all such states without discrimination. This book offers a rebalancing framework in which mental health can be viewed as a coherence between the spiritual or abstract and the physical. Well done!

Probably *the* book mental illness and spiritual awakening!
Written a few decades ago this is still a seminal work on how certain forms of mental illness can be perceived from a spiritual perspective. Well written and easy to grasp with plenty of examples to support Dr Grof's perspective. Still very stimulating and fascinating for students from either of these standpoints. Highly recommended.

Good book by a very insightful author
Good book by a very insightful author. Some parts are heavy going but I suppose that's to be expected, given the subject. Well worth reading.
