My first manga (hopefully of many)
I never took the manga/anime genre seriously.I watched Dragon Ball Z, some Naruto and One Piece as a kid but only enjoyed it for the popcorn fun that it was. Don't get me wrong, those shows are great, but didn't reach the heights of mature storytelling I've come to know from western entertainment. Having recently getting into more anime, I kept seeing the anime this manga is based on on many lists of the greatest anime. The premise of an anime show like this really intrigued me because I really enjoy grounded, gritty and suspenseful story telling. I searched for the show but I saw the ridiculous price and decided to try out this new edition of Monster and adopt a new medium in the process.I don't think I could have picked a better entry to manga. The story managed to grip me within the first few pages with its dark themes, and even darker characters. The pace of this volume is great. It slowly builds up tension and hits you up over the head with shocking, memorable moments. The book had me caring for characters in a short amount of time, something few books or shows are capable of doing. The imagery and art is incredible. There really isn't anything to complain about. The quality of the book itself is excellent. The addition of colored pages were nice also. I can't wait to see the continuation of this series.

Addicting Story and Great Quality
Once I picked this off the shelf and started reading it I couldn't stop. The story, characters, and themes were so amazing. I couldn't stop reading until I finished the book. It left me wanting more and I will definitely pick up the rest of the series.. I was skeptical in buying this at first because there were so many other series that I was interesting in reading, but I don't regret buying this. I recommend it to anyone this is truly an amazing story that gets you hooked. The quality of the book was amazing too. I do have to say the cover is easy to pick up finger marks but that shouldn't be a problem for most people. The book also includes some color pages which were splendid. It is a bit taller than your average manga but just a tiny bit smaller in height compared to VizBig editions. The width is the same as a VizBig Edition though. (comparison in images) Paper was sturdy and I had no trouble reading this comfortably. I can't recommend this enough go read it right now!

Peak Crime in manga
This story is one of the slowest but well written and is interesting with each passing chapter. The mystery of who Johan is and the contrast he is to Tenma is just outstanding literally one of the best mangas out there. This can be described as TRUE CRIME as you follow along with what happend and why it happens in detail on what makes Johan the best written Antagonist of all time.

Spoiler-Free Review
Monster, Perfect Edition, Volume 1 sees Naoki Urasawa's masterpiece finally in print again, in a nice two-in-one edition. So far only two volumes are out, but the other seven will come out in the next two years. Volume 1 starts with Kenzo Tenma, a brilliant Japanese brain surgeon living in West Germany, 1986. One night, he's forced to choose between saving the life of the mayor and saving the life of a young boy whose parents have been murdered. He chooses the boy, and sets off a chain of events.I had a hard time reading this series for more than a chapter at a time, but at the same time, I couldn't put it down for very long, either. The doctor going after a serial killer has been done to death, but Urasawa breathes new life into the genre with his strong lines and tense storytelling. My main issue with the publication is that it took 300 or 350 pages before I really started identifying with the doctor, and that simply isn't good. The doctor has a strong character, but it takes quite a bit of time to develop that character fully. That being said, this is an excellent manga. ****
