Arresting!
Like many upon first viewing of this film, I left the theatre feeling a little disappointed and confused at what I just watched. I didn't really "get it"..Being a huge fan of director Michael Mann's work and overall style, my expectations were pretty high, given this was his first major 'crime' movie since the epic "Heat" (with the exception of his previous film 'Collateral'). However I remembered how I felt when I first saw "Heat" for the first time, I felt it slow, overlong and pretty tedious.. today I find it an incredible piece of work, ahead of its time and is one of my all time favourite films. Given this, I stuck with "Miami Vice" and it paid off... Even when watching again on DVD, I remembered feeling a little empty, the same way when viewing for the first time at the cinema, however did find other parts of the film more enjoyable second time around.. Then the blu ray came out.... !Wow, perhaps I am giving the blu ray edition more credit than it deserves, but upon the third viewing I thoroughly enjoyed this movie all the way through. The passage of time in not seen it for quite a while probably added to my enjoyment as I could watch this again with a fresher view. The picture quality is excellent, the sound, almost deafening and the tweaks and scene additions made by Mann, in my view, certainly add alot more clarity and flavour to the narrative and overall flow of the film. This is a relatively long movie (about 2h 15m) however 10mins into it, I was transported into Mann's gritty Miami world (a shade wearing Horatio Cain is nowhere to be seen btw) and stayed for its duration. Very, very entertaining..Whether you are a fan of Michael Mann's work or looking for a good all round action/thriller, this is arresting stuff... sincerely glad I stuck with it ! Get the blu ray !!

This review is for the Blu-Ray Unrated Directors Edition US Import. Amazon have a habit of putting reviews from one format in with another. This version will play on a UK Blu-Ray player and Sony PS3Firstly, if you have seen this film and know what it is about, this version is slightly extended over the theatrical release. The most noticeable difference is that the film starts with a boat race/time trial. Whereas the theatrical version starts straight into the nightclub scene. The Blu-ray quality is superb, but there is a marked grain in many of the dark scenes. I think this is more of a deliberate artistic style than any fault on the transition to Blu-Ray. There are plenty of extras and some interactive ones that flag up during the film (if requested to do so). I can't comment on sound quality as I only have TV speakers, although it seems pretty good on those). Why do I love this film so much when it stands for all the things I dislike about a film? It is a bit cheesy, a bit far fetched, a bit gruesome, false accents and cliche cop action. Yet I am drawn to it like a moth to a flame. So much so that I actually upgraded my DVD to the extended blu-ray version. There are lots of opinions about which version is better, but I think both are equals - maybe I have just watched it too many times. This film has everything you would expect from a cop film: drugs, undercover ops, corrupt agents and a sense of good v evil. So it doesn't really differ from the main stream. Normally I would shy away from this type of film, but there is something very cult about this. I can't say it's hold on me is related to the TV series as I never watched it and have no intention of doing so, but it sank its claws into me from the first screening.I guess what holds my attention is that this isn't a typical audience spoon-fed script, but on the same token you don't have to have a rapt attention to detail to follow along (sometimes you just want to vegetate and not think too hard). There is a deeper story that develops throughout the film and on further viewings I found something new, a nuance, a look or the way something is said. It is this sort of new discovery that kept my attention. However, I can see that this is going to be a big miss with many folk, my wife decided after 10 mins that she was not interested in it - not quite grounds for divorce, but maybe one I will refer to in proceedings (joking!)I liken this to Against All Odds, a film that rates mid-point, but has a cult like hold on me.

Crocket, Tubbs, need I say more?
Miami Vice has played a huge part of Mum's and Dad's love of action and drama through 3 generations. It is this "Miami Vice Movie" that has managed to hook onto the 21st Century, introducing great actors as Colin Farrel and Jaimie Foxx, who are legends in their own rite. The movie is fast paced, violent in parts, and stays together with storyline and music that renders this film one of the best I've seen as of the year it was released. Personally, there should be a second, third, and maybe a finale 4th, which I'm sure Michael Mann may pick up and consider after this review? Fingers crossed. It doesn't matter if you aren't a fan, or you've never watched "Miami Vice" before, because seeing this masterpiece may actually lure you to seeing the re-runs with Don Johnson and Philip Michael-Thomas. All I can say is that owning this has added to my collection and it does so with pride of place.
