Unfortunately it doesn’t work well for that

I'm not sure, but it would depend on where the tear is. If it shows these might be too stiff and you might be able to see the patch.

Q: How well do these work on a sweatshirt?

I can't answer. I used them on Khaki work pants and one pair worked well, one pair came off after a few days.
