How often do you have to change the battery? Is once a month enough? I don’t want the battery to die in the middle of the night.

Heavens, no. Have never changed mine. Think I've had it at least a year.

Between 4-5 o'clock, what is the shiny yellow strip on the rim?

The shinny little strip is actuall a small light. At night. you can press down on the top of the clock. There is a switch built into the clock that when you press down, the small light comes on for 5 seconds. Very handy when you want to see the time in the middle of the night but you don't want a night light next to your bed.

Delightful simple

Simple, modern and does what is expected with great style. This alarm clock has an incremental sound alarm to don’t wake you in panic. Fluorescent markers could have been excellent, but it has its own night light if you press the clock.
