Does this bed have to be used in a truck bed? Does it have the flexibility to be used on the floor like a standard air mattress?

Sure. The pump that comes with it plugs into a car lighter. But it is an air mattress and would work wherever/however one inflates it. As tough for camping, too, as any air mattress. You can float in the pool with it, too. What is unique is the size and design for truck beds (thin area to go over wheel wells). There are other, less expensive choices for use not in a truck -- which is what you're paying for with product.

Would this fit a 2006 dodge dakota but with a 5'5 bed? im not concerned if the tailgate has to be open but the wheel slots would need to line up

please note that this mattress PPI PV202C will NOT fit your 5' bed. We do offer two mattresses that with fit the PPI 105 or PPI 405, these mattress include a tailgate extension mattress to increase your sleeping area to almost 7'. this comes standard in the packaging.

Will this fit in a 2007 dodge Dakota long bed?

I am sorry, I don't know that answer....it fits perfectly into our 2014 Doge Ram Pickup (we have the 6', 5" bed.) if you go online and ask for the measurements of the 2017 Dodge Dakota bed, it may show them on there. good luck...the bed is awesome by the way....very good quality.
