I didn’t have to do anything to get it to work. Are the batteries in correctly? When I turn on the wall light switch, the lights turn on. From there you can control the fan with the remote

Standard size Length was 12 to 15 inches I did not use this one, I purchased a 3ft standard fan pole from major box store as I needed to be down further from the peaked ceiling I was mounting the fan.
