Q: What gauge would I need for a 12v led rear fog light ?

The use of Posi-taps are dependent on the gauge of wire that your device is using. However, most lights, LED or otherwise, commonly use a minimum of a 18 gauge wire. I would select a Posi-tap that would handle that gauge (18-16 gauge).

Q: Will this work for a cloth covered lamp wire?

Most lamp wires are 14 to 16 gauge. You would nee a larger size Posi-Tap. I am not sure if it will work well with cloth insulation as the insulation might shred leaving a bare spot.

Q: any idea what gauge I would need for a motorcycle 12v wire? Want to tap into a switched power source. Better to have a size too large I'm guessing.

It depends on what you're powering. A 1-2 amp circuit would probably require about 18-20 gauge wire. As the numerical gauge size increases, the thinner the wire is and the less amperage it can carry. You can probably get away with 14-16 gauge wire for almost anything except a large load with a direct connection to the battery

Q: Does this connector have the one side that is split to go over a wire?

There are different types, where the wire goes in from the side and gets pierced by a pin for the electrical connection. This type I believe this has the slot on both ends. Works like a butt connector.
