The Fabric of Autism, Weaving The Threads Into A Cogent Theory

Insightful and profound
This book is, hands down, the most informative description and in-depth discussion of autistic behavior I have found. Every page is packed with insightful perspectives from the author, herself autistic. Beautiful. A must read.

A Must Read
I have been researching autism treatments for the past four years and had many, many unanswered questions prior to reading The Fabric of Autism. Judith explains the systems operating in our bodies in a way that is logical, scientific and understandable. She highlights the need for these systems to work inconjunction with each other, and explains how damage to one impacts on the entire being. Her holistic, respectful approach makes so much sense. To read about the foundation of HANDLE and it's principles has given me so much hope for the possible future of my own autistic child. Even if you are not considering implementing a HANDLE program, by reading The Fabric of Autism, you will have many of your questions about autism behaviours answered.

pertinant
If you are looking for a compassionate and insightful understanding of autism this is it. Judith explains what it is like to be autisic in ways those of us unchallenged in this way can understand. Then she gives you hope about how to change some of these challenges. A very good guide to understanding the Handle philosophy of neuroplasticity in the brain.

The Fabric of Autism
The theory of why autistic individuals behave the way they do, presented in this book, makes a lot of sense to me. I have a nine-year-old with autism and have recently started the HANDLE (Holistic Approach to NeuroDevelopment and Learning Efficiency) program with him that was recommended in the book. He is making significant improvements! I love the fact that this book was written by a woman who actually struggled with autistic characteristics herself. This gave her insights into the autistic body and mind that most authors of books on autism have never experienced and don't understand. Our child is mostly non verbal. We have started many therapy programs with him and seen him make some gains at first but then he gets stuck. According to HANDLE theory, this happens because most autism therapies start too high on the neurodevelopmental ladder. How can you learn to talk when all your mental energy is going into just figuring out where your body is in space, for example. If the paragraph above describes your child, I would highly recommend this book.

Finally an understanding from the inside out.
I highly recommend it.The author, Dr. Bluestone, was born in 1948 with autism and went on to become a neuro-psychologist. Even if your child does not have a diagnosis of being on the autism spectrum, there are behaviors and symptoms that are common among an individual who is highly sensitive to his environment and body sensations, no matter what the cause. This book will help you understand and give solutions to organic based behaviors. You can't behavior modification away a broken leg.... or a broken nervous system. Behaviors are the child attempting to communicate something is off. Parents of children saddled with the diagnoses of ADD, ADHD, ODD and reactive attachment disorder will also find this work enlightening.

the best book on autism
This is the best book I have read on autism. The holistic approach described here is sensible and based on science. I am halfway through reading it the second time. it will be a reference I will have forever. A shame it didnt fully explain the HANDLE approach. Will definitely investigate this further.

Excellent Book!
Loved this book learned so much about Autism after 10 years! more proof that Autism is a man mad disease that we have only scratched the bottom of. Our kids are suffering from multi system failure. This book explains that very well.

Is it really useful?
I have read this book, initially found it interesting, written down all potential issues that my autistic daughter might have, discussed with numerous OT, physio and neurologists and all agreed - no, you child has none of those. There is no single little technique offered for free in this book. It's key message - come to HANDLE, we know how to help you, its our know-how and we will not disclose it for free.
