Possum Magic

I loved this book as a child and decided to buy it for my nephew who is about 3 years old. Even as an adult reading this to my nephew, I found the book thoroughly enjoyable and charming and I especially love the Australiana references. This book is perfect for yougn children who have enough understanding to enjoy books. The illustrations are wonderful. It has now become a favourite bedtime story and we get numerous repeat requests to read it. I can not speak highly enough about the book and would recommend it. The fact that it was such good value makes it an extra bonus!

I bought this for my daughter when she was a toddler. Now she's almost six, still requests it at bedtime, is starting to read it for herself, and has brought it into school to show the class, as we're visiting Australia during the school holidays.Hush is a baby possum who has been made invisible by her beloved Grandma Poss. It protects her from snakes, and she has fun surprising other animals, but now she is getting sad and wants the spell lifted. After consulting all her magic books, Grandma Poss decides the antidote lies in human food - so they get on her creaky bike for a trip around the capital cities of Australia, sampling the delights of pavlova, ANZAC biscuits, lamingtons, pumpkin scones, Minties etc. on the way.The illustrations are lush, colourful, full of character, and spill all over the page. There is only a short amount of bouncy text on each page, so it's a good read-aloud for young children. There is a map of Australia on the back page, and a description of each mentioned food, so overseas readers won't miss out.My daughter is packing the book, and intends to sample every one of those foods herself during the trip. Pass the pavlova!

This was one of my favourite books growing up. It is a lovely reminder of Australian. Now my daughter loves it and we have been buying it for her friends as birthday presents.

Possum Magic is a fantastic book. I got if after reading the recommendations here and we weren't disappointed. It's a lovely story with beautiful illustrations and has helped us talk about Australia and all the different animals there.

I have used this book for Year 1 learning about Australia. This book is fab because Grandma Poss and Baby Hush travel around Australia visiting different parts. Using this book we also created our own tour of Australia finding out more information about Adelaide, Melbourne etc The illustrations and the storyline were wonderful and my class really identified with the characters and thought of their own ingredients to make Baby Hush visible again.

Very hard to track down in the UK, but a great story and a good way to introduce Australian culture and geography to your little one.

I had this book as a child and it is still lovely. Some Australian books are a bit heavy handed with naming the wildlife over and over and the story gets a bit lost, but this one is sweet.

My absolute favourite Australian Children’s book. I had it growing up & love giving it to the next generation. Great illustration & very well written.
