Can you use the plastic lid when steaming a pudding, or is it only intended for storage?

The lid is only for storage and cannot be used during steaming. I contacted Mason Cash directly for this information as I found the description on Amazon a little misleading.

A pity the lid is plastic!

I like the basin, but was disappointed with the lid as it doesn't seal very well
