Great set of knives
I would have given 5 stars but the best knife in the set, the chef knife chipped while slicing a partially thawed chunk of sausage. Great materials seem to be in this set. They say lifetime warranty so we will see. I will update as to the specifics of that. Dont hesitate to purchase fir home set. Be careful with cutting hard meat tho. Never had this happen before.

MUST OIL HANDLES! Read before purchasing.
I really like the overall look and feel of this cutlery set. It definitely looks expensive and the quality of the knives is awesome. They have a nice weight to them and feel comfy in the hand. Boy are these guys sharp! These cut through everything with ease. I took away one star because of the maintenance required and the butcher block. These knives have to have the wood handles protected by oil (food grade, like the type you use on a butcher block) BEFORE you use. You must continuously oil the handles for the life of the set. If you do not and we learned this the hard way, the wood will get rough, look worn and terrible, and feel splintery in your hands the second the handle gets even the slightest bit of moisture on it. Once this happens, other than sanding the handle down a bit, the knife handle is ruined. Obviously, these cant go in a dishwasher, but they do need to be cleaned - that includes the handles. There's no way to keep your knife set sanitary and free from food contamination without cleaning the handle. SO WHEN YOU ORDER THIS SET, ORDER THE OIL FOR THE HANDLES AT THE SAME TIME (if you don't already have some at home). We ordered Boos Blocks Mystery Oil and it works well on the handles. Just make sure to do it before you ever use the set - as soon as you remove from the box. After the initial oil, the amount you need to recondition and protect the handle depends on use. If you're using daily, you will have to oil handles at least one a month. The other reason I deducted a star was the butcher block. Don't get me wrong, it looks cool but it's a pain to clean and it's not the same quality wood as the knives. It looked a little warn on the corners straight out of the box and you can see where there's little scratches all over the wood from sliding the knives in and out. It's not the end of the world, but could be slightly improved. If you're giving this as a gift, the recipient will be blown away by the packaging alone. These suckers are beautifully and carefully packaged. You know you're opening a nice cutlery set the second you see the box. Even the different finishes on the box are perfect - Schmidt Brothers is spending a pretty penny on the boxes and packaging. Keep your box, it will be perfect if you change out sets or move. All in all, I do really like this set and I would recommend. We definitely use some pieces more than others, but that's how it goes.

Nice looking on counter but....
So the picture shows a block that appears to be solid wood...but it is veneers at least in the one I received. The good...the knives are very sharp and work well, fully forged so weight is great when using. The bad...the veneer block scratches easily when removing/inserting knives. The handles of the knives are unfinished and very rough to the touch. I really hate that and had to sand each one with steel wool and seal with butcher block conditioner. Still not smooth and I may have to seal which has taken a great deal of my time and the only reason I didn't send these back was they do look great on my counter. If your cabinets are low, you will not be able to pull these out as other reviewers mentioned on other sites I read before purchasing. My cabinets are 19" from countertop to bottom of cabinets and it is still difficult to remove and insert the knives. If you have an open area to sit them, that would be better. Overall nice set if you are willing to be very careful inserting and removing knives and finish handles yourself.

At this price point I expected much higher quality. The set I received had rough edges and inconsistent finish. Sent it back.

Quality control issues mar an otherwise good set of knives
I received these knives today. The knives themselves looked fine but the glass on the wood block was cracked along the edges where the screws are. It seems as they had tightened the screws a little too much during assembly. Unfortunately, this is the second set of Schmidt with the same problem. Too bad as it is a nice looking set.

Best set of knives I have owned!
Excellent quality! Stay sharp and are easy to maintain! I love the block they come in as it takes up less counter space and easier to use than a traditional block. The only downside is if you have low upper cabinets the knives are slightly difficult to get in and out of the block.

Excellent knife set
Excellent knife set. Surprisingly light weight (I expected them to be heavier) and incredibly sharp. Very good value for the price given what forged knives tend to sell for.
