Yes you can test TS cables with this unit. The unit will flash a 13 and a 31, indicating that pin 1 (sleeve) and pin 3 (Ring) are shorted. This condition is normal for a TS cable. If you get a 2 (tip) anywhere in the coding, you have a shorted condition or an issue with the tip.

It has RCA jacks, so yes, it has phono inputs.

Q: What will is do with a trss cable (tip-ring-twosleaves)?

Good question, unfortunately I don't have a TRSS cable to test with (except on headphones, etc. which wouldn't work for testing). I'd expect it would either disregard one of the sleaves if the internal connector only touches one, or it would read them "combined" if the connector touches both. In either case it wouldn't be accurate for reading the sleave lines but could still tell you if the tip and ring were good, and if either was shorted to the sleave(s) it could read. And typing this, I think this would actually be a TRRS (tip-ring-ring-sleave) cable; but that would've made the writeup harder. :-)
