Does it float by itself or do you have to have the wrist strap?

Just a heads up the floatie wrist strap recommended for this thing SUCKS. Absolutely sucks. I just lost my camera bc it has such a bad connection that the floatie stayed totally intact but the camera loop disconnected. Make sure you add on something much sturdier. I am buying a new camera to replace one lost and will not make the same mistake of thinking this time I have a floatie so now I won't see it disappear under the rapids. The camera itself sinks like a ROCK. You would think they could develop a neoprene cover that actually is boyant itself for those of us who will not use this to dive and don't need it to not want to pop to the surface. This is the second 300+ camera I lose from this brand to this same issue. The camera itself is excellent and easy to spot bc they make it in orange

Is the GPS feature usable to look up directions and maps? also is the wifi usable for general internet usage?

No, and No! The GPS feature here embeds location info into the image data, and will also let you know about places in the area, but will not give you directions. The WiFi is used to transfer photos off of the camera and onto your smart phone, or your home computer.
