Yes, that's how I installed mine.

I made a jig with plywood, then pin-nailed it to the doors edge. Set the depth and go at it. Last, clean up the corners with a chisel. Now you’re ready to install the locking mechanism.

Is this marine grade stainless steel for use on the coast?

Cheap Chinese stainless steel. But for the price it should work
