does the sound scare birds?

This chime will not scare away the birds. My feeders are about 20 feet away and the birds have never been bothered by it.

How thick is the cord? And how long will it last?

I don't know how thick the cords are, but they are pretty substantial. As far as how long lasting they are would depend on how you take care of them. I take mine in after the summer/fall season and put them back up in the spring avoided the snow and ice we get here. Michael

Can these be sent to a funeral home?

Yes I’m sure they can if you put the address of the funeral home in care of the deceased’s family.
