Where about on the cooker extractor fan would you fit it

my cooker had has a clipped in removable grill which when removed gives access to the air path to the cooker hood fan. If your hood does not extract to outdoors you need a carbon and grease filter... so I removed my grill and cut the two Clay Roberts sheets to size so that when I replaced my removable grill it sandwiched the two sheets in place. I cut a cardboard template first to make sure I got the right size.

When do you use the black carbon filter

You first put the white filter in so this will be the first filter above cooker and then put the black carbon filter on top so it is sandwiched in two layers.

How long do these filters last?

There's no length of time that the filters last. It's all depends on the amount of cooking plus the type food being prepared. Food which is greasy in nature shortens the life of the filter. The red indicator on the grease filter is a good reference for changing the grease filter but not necessarily the carbon filter.

Is there not meant to be a seal around the filter when you fit it?

No, there is no seal. Mine is held into place by a wire frame, you just tuck the filter underneath.
