Fender Stealth Bass String Retainer
F**W
Fender's famous design flaw makes the corporation even more money
I gave this one star for three reasons:1. It's made of soft brass that bends/ lifts upwards slightly when you tighten the string to pitch (A string in my case) and is clearly designed by a blood relative of the guy who created the original A string buzz design flaw in the headstock to start with. When fitted, it increased the break angle over the nut by only a tiny amount and that's it, so the inherent Fender design flaw that results in A string buzz remains, particularly when doing a pull-off on the string at the C to D position. I squashed mine to lower the height that it holds the string and even then it doesn't get anywhere near the angle on the D and G strings over the nut.2. As a US reviewer rightly said - Fender should be giving these away (if they worked) due to the fact that the A string rattle inherent in their basses is a company design flaw, and not something the customer should have to pay extra to fix. That said, it remedies Fender's flaw in some people's basses, judging by some of the reviews, but not others.3. It galls me to have to pay a ridiculous amount of money for a simple, tiny part not much more complicated than a washer, to an already super-wealthy corporation remarketing and renaming the same four-bolt basses each year for higher and higher prices. This year it's "Fender Professional Jazz Bass" to make last year's Fender owners feel that they might need to 'upgrade' to a new, improved model that has a different colour paint and has been blessed by one of the older Fender technicians who maybe knew someone who ate in the same cafeteria as Leo back in the day.Hopefully, no-one is stupid enough to pay what they are currently asking for this on Amazon (£16 plus £10 postage). Don't do it folks!. At the time of writing the cheapest place I found selling this in the UK is stringsdirect at £9.99 plus £0.99 postage. Contrary to these prices, it isn't made of gold....It probably costs Fender about £0.08 to make, at most.My honest opinion is if you want a proper string retainer then get something like a Sandberg string retainer, which holds down the A, D and G in one go. Even a 2nd button type retainer would work better than this and also allows you to lower it more with a file if you need to. But I understand why people would buy Fender's over-priced effort - same reason I did - you want it to be more in keeping with the original Fender aesthetic. To be 'stealthy' and unobtrusive in other words. It's the reason I spent eleven quid on a washer....
