does anyone know what oil was used by Norpro originally to season the cast iron ?

Typically cast irons are not factory seasoned. However several reviewers have commented that there was an oil that imparted a less than desire able taste, and a noticeable aroma when heating. I can confirm this, and to remedy it... I threw mine in a bonfire and let it rest in until the following day. After seasoning the pan with butter, the previously noticeable tastes/smells were gone. That being said. The "half rounds" in the pan are less so spherical, and more so like a straight walled but slightly rounded out muffin tin. This makes flipping them more difficult, and very likely to tear. They are also very small which makes filling more difficult than other designs I have used. Hope this helps.

What is meant by "Removable bottoms for easy removal and cleaning"? Does this pan have removable parts, not clear or indicated in pictures. Thanks

No coating.....Sesoned cast iron is always best and works better than thin, coated metal. I'm still using a cast iron corn muffin pan that my grandmother bought in 1927... try that with a non-stick pan.

I would not recommend this pan for anyone cooking on gas but it ...

I finally had to go and collect the pan from a main post office a week later than the latest date I had been given for delivery. I then had to pay a further £11 because a customs fee of £3 was owing and the powers that be demand a slice. That said, the pan ,once seasoned, as any cast iron pan needs to be, worked very well and the ebelskiver turned out very well. The cups are a little smaller than I remember but perfectly cooked. I would not recommend this pan for anyone cooking on gas but it meets all my needs for using an electric stove or solid fuel device. I would have given this five stars but for the delay and extra expense.n

Not as Advertised

I was going to use this product for making vitumbuas, as I thought that this pan would be quite nice as it was said to have "a non stick coating" which I had to find out wasnt true the hard way. Apart from that, the handle heated up with the pan when cooked with and the pan rusted even before I took it out of the package as well as the pan making a poisonous smell as I cooked with it, even after I had washed it on multiple occasions. I tried to get a refund but as it was delivered, even what has now been a month after I requested it, the product has not been refunded. If you want something that will actually keep you sane, I would not recommend this one sadly...

I love cast iron pans

I love cast iron pans, and in this case I have to say that this is one is not among the best I've tried so far. The cast iron itself is too porous, and comes completely unseasoned. I had to seasoned it 3 or 4 time in the oven before been able to use it, and at the end was very sticky, almost to much to be handled comfortably. Anyway, I cooked some perfect omelette and some delicious mini pancakes several times, so I can say that the pan fulfil its duties. Also, considering that other cast Iron brands are way more expensive, this one is good value for money.
