An Audio Professional's Opinion On The Mackie HM-4 Headphone Amplifier
I am feeding this headphone amp from the headphone output of a computer and it works very well. I use a cable with a stereo phono jack to feed the input of this headphone amp and a 3.5 mm stereo plug which connects to the headphone output of the computer. I have read various reviews of people who said they had hum or were missing one channel. All of these people don't know how to use it correctly. I had this headphone amp working in two minutes and the audio that it delivers is exactly the way the original recordings sounds at any volume that I care to use. The quality of the pots on this headphone amp are the same as on other pieces of Mackie equipment which is high quality. If you use the correct stereo cable, you will have no problems. When I bought this headphone amp, I also bought the correct cable. It's only a headphone amp and setting it up is very straight forward and not rocket science. I'm very happy with my purchase of this headphone amp.

No brainer. Buy it. It's great. Read why...
I usually only review products if they are really good or really bad. This Mackie HM-4 is really good. I have a home music project studio, and I bought this Mackie HM-4 for use with my Audio-Technica ATH-M50x headphones and my Tascam US2x2HR audio interface. I did listening comparisons with my headphones plugged straight into the Tascam, and then straight into the Mackie, which was plugged into the Tascam. I was pretty amazed at how much of an improvement the Mackie made in sound quality through my headphones. The improvement was immediately clear.Everything sounds more clear and vibrant. All the frequencies are more prominent, especially the bass - the bass kicks are punchy and deep with some weight behind them. Without the Mackie, those same bass kicks sound flat and deadened. Low bass tone frequencies, like with bass synth sounds in Electronica music, are clear and very present. Midranges are clear, especially with vocals. And high frequencies are crisp but not harsh. And finally, I have not heard any distortion, even at loud volume. I really think these are good to lessen potential for listening fatigue if you are into recording. You don't have to work as hard to objectively listen. For $40 bucks you really can't go wrong with this Mackie HM-4. If you are doing recording or mixing and mastering, this is a must (or any other good headphone amplifier). Even if you just want to chill and listening to your music, these are still great for that, too. Right now I am going through my music collection and just chillin, listening to song I have heard a hundred times before, and enjoying them in a new way.Happy listening!

I promise this is a stereo unit.
This product is stereo which many people seem to be having problems with I’m willing to bet they are using a ts cord or 1/4 guitar cord to bring in signal not a trs cord or balanced stereo cord. Of course it’s going to be mono and missing a channel if you use a single channel cord. Being a entry level product I’m willing to bet this is their problem. My theory is further supported when I see pictures of people summing a mono line to both channels by holding it at half plug. Technically they might as well be using a monto to stereo converter. My major gripe with the amp is it can get a lot of noise on the input if you don’t have your cord twisted the right direction allowing a proper ground. One you have it set and twisted right the amp works just fine. I have plugged 5 different sets of phones into it. From 40 dollars to 400 dollars. The amp will do what described but the product could be built better. I would rather pay 60 for it if they would put better jacks in the unit, specifically the input of i could only choose one. The pots them self i Are smooth and clean when new. Remember abuse and smoke will mess them up.
