Great cost effective Linux PC
Update June 19, 2018I found a few workarounds to get a video signal:1) Turn on the TV first, then wake up the computer.2) if the NUC is already awake, on the TV, switch sources (inputs) with the remote; you may need to do this a few times.Update May 28, 2018Wake from sleep does not wake up the HDMI port if the display (4K TV in my case) turns off automatically after a period of inactivity. It forces to unplug the HDMI cable and plug it back in. This happens on either port.dmesg shows several of these messages:drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe Aperf: interrupt took too long (3146 > 3128), lowering kernel.perf_event_max_sample_rate to 63500drm:drm_scdc_set_high_tmds_clock_ratio [drm_kms_helper] *ERROR* Failed to read TMDS config: -6drm:intel_hdmi_handle_sink_scrambling [i915] *ERROR* Set TMDS ratio failed--My NUC arrived this morning and its working great. My first NUC. Assembly was very easy and took about 15 minutes. As a best practice, downloaded and installed the latest BIOS first, then went on to do the same with the OS.I installed Ubuntu Desktop 18.04 LTS choosing the minimal install option. Right away the volume control defaults to the digital output (S/PDIF), which is the optical output on the back; if you are using HDMI switch it under Settings, Sound.Using an Apple wired keyboard the multimedia controls work properly. Volume up/down and pause/play using the Spotify app.On a 4K TV at full resolution and there are no lags in typing or moving windows around. 1080p streaming video plays properly. 4K streaming video stutters mildly on YouTube, and pauses every few seconds on Vimeo. Amazon 4K does not play due to lack of HDCP support in the Linux kernel 4.15 that ships with Ubuntu 18.04 LTS; coming in 4.17.Overall, I am very impressed with this low cost NUC. No need for a more powerful computer unless you want to play the latest video games, or have special needs such as commercial software development.Parts list:Intel NUC7 Pentium Mini PC Kit (BOXNUC7PJYH1)Crucial 8GB Kit (4GBx2) DDR4 2400 MT/S (PC4-19200) SR x8 Unbuffered SODIMM 260-Pin Memory - CT2K4G4SFS824ASamsung 860 EVO 500GB 2.5 Inch SATA III Internal SSD (MZ-76E500B/AM)

Great NAS/Mini VM server.
The nuc is quite a nice machine. I had a spare 8gb ddr4 sodimm ram module from when I upgraded my laptop to 32gb and the sshd 500gb drive from the laptop went into this nuc as well. I am running Unraid on the nuc with 3 8tb WD reds in external enclosures for a nas over usb. I am also running a few light VMs such as my visual studio TFS server. It is performing quite nice as a mini nas/server.Some things to note about the nuc:1. It is uses very little power. (Roughly 18w at full load not counting usb devices)2. It has slightly better performance than my old core 2 quad q6600 system.(cinebench r15 roughly 300 multicore)3. The intel graphics are good enough for old games and that is about it.4. Windows server 2016 can be installed on the nuc, however the wifi driver will not work without modification.5. FreeNaS installs just fine and works out of the box from my testing as well6. If you want to boot a FreeBSD or linux/unix based OS you must change the uefi setting from windows to linux and you may also need to adjust secure boot.7. I had some inconsistent OS install issues with various usb flash drives, however mySanDisk Cruzer Fit CZ33 16GB USB 2.0 seems to work consistently and is recommended for unraid. In conclusion if you want nearly 0 heat output, performance on par with the original quad cores, and have some spare laptop parts around it makes for a very nice system. It also comes with the vesa mount adapter to mount to the back of a monitor to make a pseudo AIO. It also allows the install of one 2.5" hard drive internally just takes 4 screws to open up.

Excellent choice of HTPC - everyday driver
I purchased this item along with a 500gb Crucial SSD and (2x) 4gb Crucial DDR4 memory a few months ago and I'll admit that I wasn't 100% how it would work out, as I use my desktop pretty heavily, relatively speaking. Not only has this J5005 NUC met every task I've thrown at it with resources to spare, turns out that it can handle at least DOUBLE the amount of DDR4 memory - so you can bet I'll be adding another 8gb of memory as soon as it seems even remotely necessary or whenever I finally pull the trigger on that 8TB external HDD, whichever comes first. Note - I'm NOT running Doors 10 or 7 or any for that matter and further, no MS Win software has touched my NUC; been running LMCE19 (Linux Mint, mostly) and it genuinely seems like this kit was MADE FOR LINUX. Everything worked right out of the box (after updating BIOS, obvi),; all drivers - BT, WiFi, dual monitor display, USB peripherals, yada yada...I'll cut it here but feel free to post a Q above and if I can answer it (and Amazon alerts me to it, as it has done so diligently up until this point) I'll be glad to do so. Until then it's a 10/10, would recommend.(this is a rare instance of actually reviewing an item, let alone providing it with 5/5 feedback. Take from that what you will)

Great Linux Mint PC
Dual HDMI, faster than the i3 NUC, 4 USB3 Ports, low power usage, quiet. Great for Linux Mint HTPC or office computer.Update: not as quiet as I thought since I moved it to the office from the home theater, but not loud.
