The magnet covers the entire back of animals. A 15 month old may find them fun. When you are in the kitchen, they can use them on the fridge or a metal cookie sheet. Take out the smaller animals due to choking hazard.They are made of durable wood...just in case you have a nibbler. Hope this helps :)

Do the magnets have lead in them?

I called Melissa & Doug and they verified there is no lead in any of their products (including magnets). Also, all paint is non-toxic.

Have these magnets ever left scratches when used on a stainless steel refrigerator?

Yes I took them off my refrigerator because they left scratches and put them on a magnetic board.

Are the images on stickers pressed onto the wood or are they painted on?

The images are printed on paper & glued to very nice, smooth plywood with a magnet on the back. The images can be chewed off by a small child.
