Q: What is the difference between this server and the 1034D

The biggest difference between the 1034 and the 5234PRW is the large attached sewing table. I upgraded and really miss that table. There is a ton of storage inside and it really helps to keep the fabric lined up properly to go into the serger and assists in holding large items to be serged. The other big difference is the Advanced Threading System available on the 5434 which the 1034 does not have. For serging the actual stitches available, such as the stitch widths available, on the 5234 goes from the 3.0 to 7.0mm and the 1034, only goes from 5.0 to 7.0mm stitch widths. That is because the 5234 has 2/3/4 thread overlock, blind hem and rolled hem BUILT IN stitches. The 5234 also has a stitch length of 0.8 to 4.0mm lengths (greater range than the 1034), while the 1034 has 2.0-4.0mm for overlock stitch, 1.0 to 2.0mm for the narrw stitch and 1.0mm for the roll stitch. The 1034 cannot be set for 2 thread overlock and the 5234 has two stitch fingers rather than one to allow for more versatility in the stitch widths. Overall the 5234 is a more versatile machine than the 1034, has more options and advancements which in the world of sergers generally translates into easier to use, thus the price difference. The 5234 also has a trim catcher attached to the machine. I hope this helps!

Q: Do you have to open the machine to retract the blade? or is the cutter dial on the outside of the machine?

You have to open it. But it is VERY easy to get to. Just pop open the door and the blade can easily be retracted.

Q: Can snap on feet from my j’anime sewing machine be used on this serger

We recommend only using Brother accessories for the Brother products.

Q: Can this be used as a regular sewing machine?

The Brother 3234DT is a serger only and does not have sewing capabilities.
