Q: How wide is the blade at the base so that I know if it will fit into the knife block I have?

The width of this knife at the back is 14/16. Shun knives are very thin, only about 1/16 inch thick. At the very back this thickness only increases about another 1/32. The 3 1/2 inch measurement is of course the length of the sharp cutting edge. The knife would sit in a block a tiny bit further up to where the steel begins to curve in the back. These are truly beautiful knives and incredibly sharp. They do require care such as no dish washers. Always immediately hand clean and thoroughly dry and put away in a good knife block after use. Always use on a wood cutting block, no glass etc. or risk chipping the blade. If you plan to collect a set of these I would suggest eventually looking at one of the Shun Bamboo Knife Blocks.

Q: What is the cutting edge angle?

I believe it is 15 degrees and you must sharpen using Asian vs European angle. These are very sharp blades for sure.
