Q: Can this be used independently with no laptop? Asking for my nephew who is a total beginner and needs something he can use independently.

You have to keep in mind this needs to be plugged in with a DAW to control sounds. The MK3 Mini comes with free versions of Ableton and ProTools, I highly recommend Ableton. It also comes with some free instruments, like the Lounge Lizard keyboard plugin. It has a set up guide built in on its website. Your nephew will have to do some research on DAW's and MIDI before he can get started. Luckily there are plenty of beginner videos on YouTube.
