I'm extremely skeptical of para-medical and even routine medical promises, so I drilled deep and researched very thoroughly about this PROBIOTICS subject.I had heard for a very long time about prebiotics & probiotics & the intestinal flora. Within ten days felt excellent results.Main changes for me were/are "MENTAL CLARITY & POO POO & LOSING WEIGHT". I bought this product because I was experiencing painful oral thrush for weeks. I had excess yeast buildup in my mouth, severe dry mouth, my tongue was raw and burning and I could hardly eat or drink anything at all. I am an 85-year old female in generally good health, 5' 9" tall, weighing 130 lbs; generally follow a low-carb plant-rich 'Mediterranean diet", eat organically as much as possible, and follow many of Life Extension's protocols and use many of their supplements. I have suffered for about 15 years with collagenous colitis (diagnosed by biopsy); this condition shares many symptoms with IBS, in my case: frequent urgent, loose stools, 'dumping syndrome', and smelly farts. We had been reading a lot of the research about the importance of probiotics and individual biomes, and decided to get a detailed stool analysis through Life Extension. The analysis revealed a disbiosis index of 3 (on a scale 1-5), an abundance of Morganella morganii, low elastase, and very high fat stain. We then decided to try treating my condition with inulin beginning with 1/2 teaspoon daily (with breakfast) and a probiotic. After finding some criteria and recommendations on-line, I chose Purely Optimal's Probiotics, 1 capsule daily. However, I couldn't find clear or consistent information about when to take the probiotics, so I began taking the probiotic just before dinner, which resulted in an extremely noisy rumbling stomach and lots of gas. I then went on line and found a suggestion to take the probiotic at bed-time to give the probiotic time to establish itself overnight. Although this was anecdotal, it offered a new approach, which I followed. Almost immediately, the combination of inulin and the probiotic at bedtime resulted in normal stool consistency (3-4 on the Bristol stool chart) and frequency (once a day). This has maintained itself for about six weeks now, and for me it seems almost miraculous. My question now is: once a normal biome seems to be established, is it necessary to continue to take the probiotics every day? Or does it become relatively self-sustaining, perhaps renewed from time to time -- like once a month, for example?
