From a stage absolutely, it will look like it up close. Wouldn't know until you touch it.

Yes a large with fit those sizes.

Q: Does it run big or small? 46R in dress coat and 36 pants should I jump up to an XL?

I’d say the standard runs medium to large. It fit my son where it wasn’t too loose not too tight, but his 6’4” lean build helped it hang well. You may find an XL as a better fit because my son normally wears medium but sometimes large shirts.
