Sena has universal intercom pairing so that you can use your Sena Intercom with a Cardo. Refer to Sena's site for more info.

How is the connectivity with previous Sena units (non mesh, etc)? Are there any compromises there?

There is the Sena +Mesh unit that connects via bluetooth with Sena non-mesh units and connects with the 50-R perfectly and easyly through the intermcon feature.
