Q: How are these different from your average sponge?

Yes, when cold they are much stiffer than a sponge, more the consistency of a stiff plastic scourer. When soaked in hot water they soften so somewhat closer to regular sponge and firm up again upon cooling/drying. Standard Scrub Daddy doesn't soak up water well so is good specifically for scrubbing, but the dual-sided ones are kind of "best of both" - scrubbing power of a scrub daddy, but the other spongy side holds water making scrubbing and cleaning much easier!

Q: What is the difference between scrub daddy and scrub mummy

Scrub daddy is purely a scourer texture. Scrub mommy has a soft sponge side as well as the scourer side. Both very good products and very versatile.
