The metal spinny thing on top is designed to work with senheisser transmitter for sound recording. You screw this on to the transmitter to ensure it does not come detached once plugged in.

Q: Will it work with smartphone? What adapter do I need?

I would avoid trying to use this with your smartphone. It is highly unlikely (brand depending) that this will work. You can get other lapel mics that will work with your smartphone. Again depending on your smartphone there are adaptors to suit. Just google lapel mic follow by your smartphone brand and you will find a kit. This is professional grade to be plugged in and screwed on to a professional sound recorder transmitter

Q: Does this come with a clip to attach to clothing? There's nothing in the picture or description about this.

yes it does...be aware though that with this new model you can't remove the windbaffle like the old one
