A really good beard and mustache trimmer
The media could not be loaded. This review is for the Philips Norelco Beard and Hair Trimmer Series 5500. I had a previous version of this beard trimmer (the old BT5275) and it lasted me over 5 years. I was looking for a replacement beard and mustache trimmer that was height adjustable, without having to change the plastic cutting guides. I saw this one on Amazon. It looked similar to my old one, so I bought it.As one would reasonably expect, the newer series 5500 has some improvements over the one I am replacing. Here's what I love about this BT5500:1) you can adjust the cutting length, longer or shorten, by simply spinning the dial.2) the attachments/guides for the BT5500 are SUPERIOR to the older version, allowing more even cutting of my stubborn beard hairs that seemed to curl under the attachment on the older version.3) the dial on the BT550 has sturdy settings. this decreases the likelihood that applying too much pressure while trimming will result in the height slipping and cutting too short. as an aside, that never happened on the older one, but I was always aware of how hard I was pushing the trimmer into my beard.4) - should be up higher - you CAN USE IT WHILE IT'S PLUGGED IN! that's huge!!!5) the cord is long enough to actually allow cutting while plugged in. it's a shade over 72" (182 cm). You're not tethered to the wall with this thing6) no bulky stand-up type charging base. i much prefer the cord.I am very happy with my purchase.

Large Trimmer - For Man Hands!
I was searching for a trimmer to get my facial hair to desired stubble length. This dial height adjustment guard is easy to use and many lengths to choose from (.4 to 20mm). This trimmer is also larger than many others and comfortable to hold. For those with large hands or arthritis/ carpal tunnel, this may make it easier to use (but I'm not a doctor!). I've included a photo comparing the size for this Philips Beard and Stubble Trimmer to the Wahl 2.0+ (similar in size to the Multigroomer line) and the Philips Norelco OneBlade Trimmer. The problem with the other clip-on, non-adjustable guards is that they come in set sizes. Seems most common for facial hair is 3mm (#1 guard) and I found that "3mm" guards varies greatly depending on manufacturer. I tried the Philips Norelco Multigroomer 3000 (less expensive) which includes a 1mm stubble guard and it shaved bare. I wanted something in between. This dial (lights up the size when adjusting) allows you to go from bare to 20mm quickly. I would imagine this is also a benefit if doing a fade style haircut. I have only used the facial hair guard thus far. It clicks into place and feels secure, but yet easy to remove for cleaning. I've also shaved my head bare without the guard and it worked well.An important note - this Philips Series 5000 Beard and Stubble Trimmer ($49.96) is NOT the same as the Multigroomer 5000 ($39.96). Yes, the multigroomer is "18 piece" versus "4 piece", but I'd prefer 1 adjustable guard versus a ton of loose guards that I have to sort through and can get lost. Plus this trimmer is fully washable whereas the Multigroomer 5000 you need to remove and rinse only the attachments. As noted previously, there is a size difference between the two.It would be nice if this trimmer included the detail trimmer head, but something I can live without. Another area for improvement is if it came with or had a travel case available. I'd rather bring 1 trimmer and guard on a trip rather than a bag full of useless accessories. Overall a solid choice for this price point, especially if you don't want a dainty size trimmer!

They're good, but not amazing.
It's just good. I bought this with the intention of replacing my face trimmers and hair clippers. I keep a short shadow on my face and a short fade for my hair. The idea of being able to do all that with only three guards was very enticing.I started with my face and was surprised at the increased number of passes I needed. I think though I'm just not used to using a guard and need practice maintaining the correct angle for a constant cutting length. My hair was a little disappointing. I was again surprised at how many passes I needed. And even after so many passes I was still left with inconsistent lengths. It took me my over twice as long (which still really isn't a terribly long time), but I was eventually 90% satisfied. I took a shower and noticed more inconsistent spots, but was able to clean them up easier I found after my hair was wet. Again, I think I just need practice holding the smaller blade and guard and a consistent angle and making more overlapping passes. The clippers work well, but I'm not "impressed". I'm satisfied enough to keep them because of not needing 2 clippers and half a dozen guards. I really like the dial system... It works well. I really only need two guards for my hair length which is also a plus (I typically do a 2.0 on the top and 1.0 on the sides). One review mentioned there are no numbers indicating the length setting, but this is not the case. The numbers are backlit and illuminate when the dial is adjusted.

1 Day in, 5/5 stars!
Ok so I've only had this product for one day, but I can tell already that this is a great device for trimming my goatee. The manually adjustment built right into the trimmer is absolutely perfect for me. I dialed in a 13.5 for my goatee and it was a great trim. Super fast. Clean. Even. Between shaving my head and trimming my goatee I'll never need to switch the main attachment for any other. Feels solid and charged up relatively quick. Oh, when the battery is dead ( mine arrived dead ) I was still able to use it when plugged in. Can't say that about my previous model. 5/5 stars without a doubt. I tossed on the extra coverage for $4 because who knows, right? For $4 that's worth it in my opinion. Asurion has been really good to me in the past so might as well at this price.
