Cybertronian Starscream
When the Transformers cartoon came out in the 1980s the opening of the first episode revealed an intriguing surprise when, for several of the characters, it exhibited differing alternate modes to those possessed by their toy equivalents. Over subsequent decades a lot of Transformers have received entirely different alternate forms (Megatron alone has been various guns, jets, tanks and trucks), but at the time this was quite a revelation. For me, the most fascinating were the spaceship looking forms of those character that later became known as ‘seekers’ (they were certainly more interesting than Soundwave’s appearance as some type of lamppost). There have been a couple of toy versions of various Seekers as Cybertronian, futuristic jets over the years but these have been based on other continuities. This is the first time there has been a figure of Starscream based around his Cybertronian form from the original G1 continuity, this ‘War for Cybertron: Siege’ range is all being based upon the events that were taking place during the opening of the cartoon’s first episode after their repeat, in a way, in the ‘Bumblebee’ film. Of course, the practicalities of this being a toy that must also possess a robot mode means that it doesn’t look exactly like that version seen in the cartoon. The undercarriage of the jet is made up of the folded away legs and arms of the robot mode. However, from the top the vehicle has a good enough likeness to be satisfying. The robot mode, like a lot of later Transformer lines has the emphasis upon capturing the Generations 1 appearance and this Starscream is a good likeness of his cartoon and comic counterparts. The transformation process has a couple of fiddly bits and the breastplate panel is a little delicate, but it is generally quite an enjoyable process that fits together well in both forms. To fit the ‘siege’ theme the figure comes with battle scarring that is quite a nice touch. Alongside his futuristic form, this adds to this version of Starscream being a little different to the multitude that have gone before. A nice edition to any collection.
