I have a cheaper carousel optic at home, is it a standard fitting to connect to most frames?

Yes, it just slides into the clips and fits the normal bar at the top. No leaks from the bottle either.

Theoretically is it possible to open one of these up punch a hole in the top valve making the hole optic a free flow? (not a 50 ml measuring optic)

You might have a problem equalizing pressure - optics do it a few bubbles at at time..
