It works with Shimano brakes. I am not sure compatibility with other brakes.

If I want to completely replace the hose on a M395, how many of these kits do I need? Is there anything else I need other than the line?

We would recommend purchasing the line kit, which should include all mounting hardware. Piecing the line kit separately is extremely difficult to do.
