A Very good series, especially for Harry Potter fans (Recommended 8+ years old)
Pros: - Good for kids somewhere in the 8-12 range. - Has the right amount of mystery, action, and character building. Also shows some real development of the characters through the series. - This is another series about kids going to magic school, so if you liked the Harry Potter series, this should strike a familiar chord. - Fun to read to your kids. It's a bit above the reading level of my 8yo. She could stumble through it, but it's meant for readers more along the lines of 10+ I feel. - Mostly age appropriate. There's not much to be concerned about in terms of subject matter. Some passages might be too dark for younger kids. Not gory, or explicit, but might be much for kids under 8. This book 4+ for HP and you'll get the idea here. Cons: - A lot of similarities to Harry Potter. This is arguable of course, but... 3 friends: 2 boys, one girl. Magic. Magic school. Evil overlord storyline. Get me? - Writing can be a bit hammy at times. Some of the writing is just not exactly best-seller quality, but you can say that about everything no? - Really nothing else to object to. Conclusion: If you have a kid somewhere in the 8-12 age group, this is a good series for them. Whether you're reading it to them, or enjoying it themselves, there's nothing to object to content-wise, and the writing is quite good for a series that *could* been another HP knock-off. One of the writers of this series also wrote this other great series that you'll probably like as well: https://www.amazon.com/Spiderwick-Chronicles-Complete-Tony-DiTerlizzi/dp/1442487984/

Looking for a new series for my 11 year old son to read that would interest him and is part of the schools AR scheme - came across these. The first book was a little slow to start but then he really got into them and we found him getting up early just to read! Storyline is based around wizards, magic school and secret adventures... 10/10
