Scarface (1983) [DVD]

Say hello to my little friend!
This was a very controversial movie for the time it was released in. The movie rating committee wanted to give it an "X," but were eventually talked down to an giving Scarface an "R." Even an "R" rating was nothing to tweak your nose back, in the early 1980's. Movies with that rating in the 1980's are nothing but after thoughts in 2018.DePalma was almost fired for taking the movie way overbudget, and taking so long to make, but the end result was worth it. His meticulous directing gave shape to the greatest ganster movie of all time! Rappers, and other icons, site this movie as their rock for their beliefs. The world is hard, and only balls will get your anywhere in this world. He who dares, wins. This movie is the foundation on which most rappers, and modern day gangsters base their entire moral compass around. This movie was a flop at the theatres, but when introduced to the new VHS format, it found a huge following, as a cult classic. The movie is full of infamous scenes, and one-liners, etc, that are still being used working on 30+ years later. This movie still sells a lot of dvd's, t-shirts, etc to this day.The movie was very well written, by eventual famous director, Oliver Stone. The movie is a modern day remake of the original Scarface, but in a different vein, the modern day cocaine trade in Miami, Florida. Led by an all-star cast, and the biggest star Al-Pacino. This movie resurrected Pacino's floundering career, and was a big stepping stone for all the other stars, including Michelle Pfeiffer. The disco musical score visits this movie perfectly, as disco was still riding high in this time period. Lastly, the directing is top rate, as DePalma used his movable camera filming to enhance the visual excitement of this landmark movie.Scarface was originally given an "X," do to the excessive F-bomb usage in this movie, and violence. I don't think another movie to this day has more F-bombs then Scarface, lol. Also, the infamous chainsaw is very intense, yet you never actually see the chainsaw tearing any flesh, brilliant camera work. The movie had to be moved out of Miami, as the police, local government, and local gangsters were all in an uproar about a cocaine/gangster movie being made in a city teeming with it's exact problem. So, the movie had to be relocated to the west coast, to be finished.Just an amazing movie, in every way, 6 stars!!! Highly recommend.

Get the blu ray version even if you already have sd. The difference in quality will make you shout WOW!!!
First, I love the movie. I will not review the movie itself because there are already far more eloquent reviews here than I could give. My contribution is to tell you that I bought the sd version first. The transfer was ok but nowhere near as good as it could have been. It also does not have subtitles to my recollection which I like to have on when I'm watching a movie with heavy foreign accents because it makes them easier to understand. Then I bought the blu ray and my review is WOW!! The difference is like night and day. The picture is crystal clear. The sound is perfect. It has accurate and complete subtitles. There is nothing bad I can say about the blu ray version. All this being said, if you don't have a blu ray player or can't afford the extra few bucks that the blu ray costs, get the sd version anyway because the movie is that good.

Fantastic escapist fiction
The disc itself is fine, inexpensively reproduced, but digitally functional. Movie itself is a thrill ride.

Only a PG rating....
I guess the reason I like this movie is that it is really a spoof. No one comes from Cuba and within 2 years becomes drug King pin of South Florida, but forget the plot, it is the characters that make this movie work. Trying to recreate that late 1970s feel is done quite well. Al Pacino's Latino accent is a bit off at times and on more than one occasion I heard a little NYC in some of his words, but easily forgiven.I watched the DVD with Spanish dubs AND Spanish sub-titles and I even noticed that there were several mistranslations there, too. The Spanish voices are pretty poor. You would think the post production people could have come up with nastier sounding dudes. All in all, I still give it an A+
