great flash, but...
i was surprised to see how good this flash looks. i see no real difference in quality build over my nikon flashes. i read a lot of reviews where users complain about slow recycling time so i planed on getting the external battery pack.. but it is not needed! using eneloop XX in it, it recycles in less than 3 sec. that is at full power, and i rarely need it all. now, my only problem with this flash is that it does not work properly in ttl with my pocket wizard triggers.. but in manual mode does a great job. if they fix this problem thru firmware updates (both nissin and pw) it will be the perfect flash. bottom line, its great as long as you do not rely on ttl when used with pocked wizards

A real alternative to the 580
This was my 5th Nissin unit. I've bought 466's, 622's and now an 866. The unit has a ton of features. It performs every function of the 580 as far as I can see. I like the flexibility of 1/128 - 1/1 power settings. I have used an external battery pack which is a feature that makes cycle times incredibly short! Lastly the battery module/door is the right way to go and makes it easy to change and in fact to carry ready to load spares. I am actually torn between getting 4 more $90 Vivitar 285HVs with AC adapters and 2 of these units with external battery packs!-UPDATE- The unit I bought is now having an issue. It will NOT sync properly. It is flashing, but it is off-sync. I am looking at getting a fireware reflash done. I tried on two different Canon 7D's. Same results.

Great flash
I don't always use a shoe mount flash, so When I went to test my Nikon SB-600 flash last month and found it not non-functional after less than 1000 flashes, I started doing research and consulted with my camera guy for suggestions. My choice, Nissin ND866MKII-N Di866 Mark II Speedlight arrived last Friday, and I love it. It's far more sophisticated and less expensive than the Nikon SB-600, while at the same time a lot easier to use. In automatic mode it adjusts perfectly.

Fire Hazard. Beware of buying and landing in problem. Company attitude apalling !!!!
MY AGONY IN DEALING WITH NISSIN FLASH PRODUCT. THIS IS FOR ANYBODY WHO IS GOING FOR THIS BRAND. BE AWARE OF THIS COMPANY !!!!I posted email earlier to your local distributor in India and also to your Hong Kong site. No reply for 2 weeks. Now i sent another email and get a mail asking me send details. The defective piece is already with your local distributor in India Shristi Distributors and they are aware of this. Neither they did anything nor did they acknowledge the email. Now you are asking me the details when already the defective piece is with your Indian Distributor. Pathetic Nissin. Did not expect this quality from you. Morever your response grossly inadequate when major fire incidant your product generated. Feel all over the world people should be aware about using your products and risks involved.I just for few days and see your response. If i do not get proper response shall do a world wide awareness programme about Nissin and its quality and hazards of using your products and also the response we get once some major fire hazard is generated from your product.I posting down the email i sent to your Hong Kong Office and Your Indian Distributor and did not get reply.Sir/Madam,I took couple of years ago Nissin Mark II Di 622, since someone suggested that you can try this brand. Even thought had doubt about third party flashes, took this flash and used it occassionally since already have canon flashes. Otherday i was using this flash mounted on my Canon 5D Mark III camera and suddently noticed burn smell and fumes coming out of the flash battery compartment. Immediately dismounted the flash from the camera and noticed fumes coming from the battery compartment and circuit got burnt out. This is the first time i noticed such issues from a flash. Never ever had problems with Canon flashes. Don't you think this is serious issue and it would have destroyed my precious and costly camera. Luckily it do not short circuit the camera and my camera was saved.I contacted the local dealer of Nissin in India "Shristi Distributors" They told that they will repair the unit and send me back. My issue is not repair. Flash unit generating fire and causing damage is a serious issue. That indicates a serious issue in the quality of the unit and any company should take it seriously. I can't think a answer that you will repair and send it back to me. My concern is the quality of the unit. I will not take even one percent risk in using a faulty unit and risk my costly camera getting spoilt. I don't think any effort was made to contact the main Nissin company about this issue and decision was taken at a local level and it was considered to be a trivial issue. How come you don't have proper incharge people from you company for such serious issues in this country. Are you thinking that since its not "USA" regulations are poor in this country and you cannot get away with such things. Can Nissin respond to me urgently on this issue. Can i share this issue on the online forums since don't want anybody to risk buying these units and getting hurt and also get their costly cameras damaged. With regards,Dr. Sarat.C.V.Talluri,Chief of Internal Medicine and Pulmonary/Critical Care,CARE Institute of Medical Sciences,Hyderabad, India.

Awesome Flash!
One of the best flashes on the market hands down. Fast recycling time, very bright, has an easy to use LCD screen on it and the front fill light make this an amazing deal! Very good job building this product. I will never buy another brand of speed light!

Really like this one.
For the price, it beats out all of its competitors. It has all the bells and whistles you could really want.It has a super awesome UI, MUCH MUCH better than just the simple buttons on all other flashes. It actually has an auto rotating display which you can navigate very easily. The power output on this is pretty much what it says. In my testing it is slightly less, but just.I do have to issues with this though. First is the battery door. To me it doesn't seem to close all the way. This is no way effects the performance, but it could pose a problem in slight rain without proper gear protection. The other is my flash makes a strange slightly audible electric sound. Like a buzzing but more like what you hear on one of those plasma ball lights. Kinda odd. In normal use, you don't even notice it. But in a quite room it is def there.4 stars due to the battery door.
