Doyle's book is a fine introduction to recent research on what really works in college teaching. His slogan "the one who does the work does the learning" is a great place to start in rethinking who should be doing most of the talking (students) in the classroom. This is a challenging book is some ways (not hard to read, but hard to implement!) yet I recommend it to anyone who wants to improve their practice.

I've read several similar books recently (working on a grant), and this is the best of the lot. Although it's aimed at tertiary-level instructors, I teach honors and AP courses at an independent school, and I found it full of ideas and applications for my classroom. I've incorporated at least eight different steps into my course-planning for the coming year.

Readable, but not fantastic.

This text will revolutionize your teaching at the college level. It describes the philosophy and techniques used to change passive boring lecture into a vibrant learning environment. It is one of the best books on learner centered teaching around!

This is a great summary of recent research on how the brain learns and creates memories. Very useful in constructing positive learning environments for students.
