Superb reference book but not much background
Works well as a reference book but background and analysis about the "Designer Toy Explosion" is restricted to just 4 pages at the front. There are also some Q&As with artists at the back, which are occasionally illuminating, for example Mori Chack explaining the origin and concept for Gloomy Bear. The majority of the book consists of almost 350 pages of excellent colour photographs, with toys split into country/region (Japan, China, USA, Europe and Elsewhere) and designer/studio. As it's published by Kid Robot, there are pages and pages of Dunnys, but less well known toys are also featured in surprising depth. It's very useful if you want to get a quick handle on the work of a particular artist or studio, although it isn't necessarily exhaustive. Overall it's a nice potted history of the movement and is great fun to dip into.
